Suffield Shakedown 2010

Thank you to all those involved with the scrimmage and making it another successful event. Thanks also to all those teams that ventured out to test their robots and to those teams who came to watch. Congratulations to the winning alliance: Teams 177, 178 and 3125. Aces High wishes everyone a fun and successful season. See you at the competitions!
Welcome to Suffield Shakedown, Aces High's 10th annual FIRST Robotic Scrimmage at Suffield High School, Suffield, CT. This pre-ship date scrimmage is an informal but fun event giving teams the opportunity to practice their driving skills, test their robot and observe other teams on the official FIRST playing field. Included below are many of the details on how our scrimmage will be run. For those of you new to the event, be assured we try to be as flexible and helpful as possible. Remember this is designed to showcase the talents of our teams, practice and have fun!
***PLEASE NOTE: Registration for Suffield Shakedown is full, we will continue to place teams on our wait list. Should a registered team notify us that they can not compete, then the next registered team on the wait list will be notified of the availability. Notification may come as late as the night before the scrimmage. ***

From I-91 North:
Use exit 47W- Suffield. Merge onto CT-190W and follow over the bridge on the CT River. At the end of CT-190W (1.5 miles), turn left onto route CT-159, East Street N. In 0.8 miles, turn right onto Bridge Street. Follow to the end (1.9 miles). Turn Right at the light onto Main Street CT-75 and take your immediate Left at the light onto Mountain Road CT-168. Follow 1.4 miles. Turn left onto Sheldon Street. Suffield High school is 0.7 miles on your Right.
From I-91 South:
Merge from I-91N (exit 40) onto CT-20W towards BRADLEY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. After 3.4 miles, merge onto CT-20W via East Granby/Granby. In 2.6 miles, turn right at traffic light onto CT-187, N Main Street. Drive 2.7 miles on CT-187. At the 4 way stop, go straight through. High School will be 0.9 miles on your left.
From CT Route 20E:
Take route 20E to CT-187, N Main Street. Follow directions above.
From CT Route 20W:
Follow directions from I-91 South.
From MA-10/ CT-202:
If traveling from the North Turn Left, If traveling from the South Turn Right, onto Congamond Lake road (Big Y/Ocean State Job Lots and McDonalds/ Citgo Gas at the intersection) and travel a total of 7.6 miles. (You will cross into CT and the road name will change to Mountain road CT-168 a few miles from start of road). Turn right onto Sheldon Street. High School is 0.7 miles on your right.

Dave Leenhouts Award
This award was established in 2008 in honor of Dave Leenhouts who started Aces High and was instrumental in the establishment of several other FIRST teams.
We would like to present this award yearly in honor an adult mentor/leader/teacher/engineer who has been nominated by his or her student team members for being an exemplary leader through their vision, dedication, and inspiration.
Deadline for this years award nomination is January 30th, 2010.

*****All Team members must fill out a FIRST CONSENT AND RELEASE FORM if an electronic form has not been filed. Team Coaches will be asked to verify by signature that their team has fulfilled this requirement upon registration******
Safety glasses must be worn by anyone entering the pits or on the field!!!!

In order to give each team as many practice rounds as possible, it is imperative that teams notify the registration desk:
- When they arrive
- When their robot is ready
- If the robot is having mechanical problems and will need to miss a round.
Please bring an extension cord
During the event, please do not leave valuables (including laptop computers) unattended!!!!!

Tentative Schedule
8:00 am Pits open
9:00-11:30 am Practice rounds begin or when the FIRST field and enough teams are ready to begin. The number of practice rounds will be determined by the number of teams and their readiness.
9:30-11am- Workshop: Introduction to the Competition (room TBA)
11:30 am Drivers meeting (room TBA)
11:30 am-12:30pm Lunch *Please note an important note about food on the next page*
12:00 pm Opening Ceremonies
12:30-2pm NEMO(Non-engineering mentor Organization) meeting (room TBA)

Additional Rules:
- Safety is a top priority-please wear safety glasses when working on the robot and in the player station
- Only drive team and officials will be allowed on the field
- Gracious Professionalism is the expectation
- Please remain in the gymnasium, “common area”, and main front hallway. Absolutely no admittance to the rest of the school.
Competition Rules
We will be following all the rules outlined for the 2010 Breakaway game. We will not be performing robot inspections but trust all teams will keep their robots in compliance with the rules.
Practice Rounds
Morning rounds will have no competition value and solely for practice. The number of rounds each team plays will be determined by the number of teams in attendance and their readiness. Every attempt will be made to provide for a maximum number of rounds for each team.
FOOD
NO OUTSIDE FOOD PLEASE, as this is a fund raising event for Aces High. We have attempted to keep the prices as reasonable as possible despite rising food costs. We plan to provide prompt service.
· Breakfast snacks (donuts & muffins) along with hot and cold beverages
· Lunch choices include pizza, hot dogs, and sandwiches
· Snacks and beverages will be available throughout the day

- 8 Slices in each Large Pizza from a local pizza shop

WHAT'S HAPPENING DURING THE EVENT?
9:30 - 11:00 am- Introduction to the Competition –
We invite new mentors, students and parents to join us for a workshop on what to expect at a FIRST Robotics Competition Regional event. Hosted by NEMO (Non-Engineering Mentor Organization) the workshop is scheduled to feature an overview of the Regional, inspection procedures, refereeing process, judging procedures and what the pits are all about by Northeast Utilities Connecticut Regional Chair Mike Sperber, Lead Robot Inspector Mike Betts, Head Referee Dave Goric, Judge Advisor Jon Mittelman and Emcee Jack Kentfield. Time permitting, a question and answer session will follow.
1:00 - 4:00 pm – Robot Inspections –
The lead inspector for the WPI Regional and the Connecticut Regional Competitions, Mike Betts, will be available all afternoon to review any team’s robot designs and perform a voluntary, nonbinding, “courtesy inspection” to any team who requests it. Please sign up with Mike at the morning Introduction to the Competition workshop if your team would like to utilize this service.
1:00 - 2:00 pm - NEMO (Non-Engineering Mentor Organization) Meeting
An open discussion on non-technical topics for all adult mentors. Share your concerns, ideas, and network with other mentors.
FIRST Lego League and Dream FIRST hosted by team 178 the 2nd Law Enforcers will again be showcased.
FLL will be in the auditorium between 10am and 12 noon.
Please follow the signs down the 200 hallway for Dream FIRST in the afternoon.
